Post-doctoral researcher - Virology (F/M/D)

The Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK) engages in teaching, research, and diagnostic microbiology across the fields of virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and serological infection diagnostics.

It is the only university institute in Switzerland that combines all microbiological specialties in clinical microbiology under one roof.

Within the IFIK, the Experimental Virology research group works on characterizing viral zoonoses and host pathogen interactions in the respiratory epithelium of humans and animals pertinent to

re-)emerging viruses. Within the One Health framework and funded by the newly established Multidisciplinary Center for Infectious Diseases (MCID) at the University of Bern (https : / / tinyurl.

com / MCIDswIAV), our research group offers an exciting, interdisciplinary position for an Early Career Researcher (ECR) interested in virus-host interactions.

Project : Influenza viruses can infect multiple species, including humans, pigs, and various domestic and wild birds. Pigs are particularly important for interspecies transmission since they can serve as mixing vessels for generating novel pandemic human influenza A viruses (IAV).

During this project, we will monitor and characterize IAV circulating in pig and human populations and combine genomic, epidemiological, and microbiological data to investigate IAV evolution, transmission, and biological and clinical phenotypes in humans and pigs.

Under the supervision of PD Dr. Ronald Dijkman, the post-doctoral researcher will characterize IAV lineages circulating in pigs and humans in biologically relevant in vitro models of the respiratory epithelium to generate a comprehensive risk profile for these viruses and increase preparedness for future viral threats.

The project will be performed at the Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK) in close collaboration with the Virus Genomics / Bioinformatics research group at the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI), and clinicians at the veterinary and human medicine faculties at the University of Bern.

We are looking for a passionate Early Career Researcher (Post-doc) interested in delineating fundamental host-pathogen interactions in the respiratory epithelium of mammals who would like to work with an international and multidisciplinary team.

Experience in molecular virology and advanced cell culture are prerequisites and previous experience working at biosafety level 3 is advantageous.

The position is initially for one year, supported by the University of Bern 120% Care Grant and the MCID, and requires a PhD in virology or equivalent;
