Job Description

Introduction

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, scientists are probing the fundamental structure of the universe.

Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light.

The process gives scientists clues about how particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on .

has been set up by CERN in response to the 2013 European Strategy for Particle Physics to foster fundamental research in the field of long baseline accelerator-based Neutrino Physics.

We are looking for a physicist with several years of post-doctoral research activities in detector R&D and accelerator-based neutrino experiments to develop detector technologies for the DUNE Vertical Drift detector and lead the construction of the Charge Readout Planes successfully.

You will join the CERN EP Department and you are expected also to make a leading contribution to currently running neutrino experiments in which the group is involved, and participate in challenges such as calibration activities and data preparation for analysis.

Especially experience analysis of emulsion data will be useful.

Functions

  • Test, commission and optimise detector and readout systems of large volume Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers.
  • Lead the design and construction of the Charge Readout Plane (CRP) modules of the DUNE Vertical Drift Detector.
  • Represent the Organization in the DUNE experiment’s scientific and technical consortia.
  • Design and develop innovative detector technologies for accelerator-based neutrino experiments.
  • Support other R&D projects of relevance for the purposes of the CERN Neutrino Platform project and of the EP Neutrino group.
  • Analyse, interpret and document the performance of measurements of large-scale neutrino detectors.
  • Participate in communication, academic trainings and outreach activities.

Experience :

  • Experience in development, construction and operations of large noble-liquid particle detectors.
  • Experience participating actively in large particle physics experiments.

Technical competencies :

  • Knowledge and application of liquid based particle detection technologies
  • Simulation, design, and development of noble-liquid based detectors (or similar detector technologies) for accelerator-based experiments.
  • Assembly and system integration of large volume detectors and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge and application of event reconstruction techniques.

Behavioural competencies :

  • Creating Vision and Strategic Partnerships : Creating shared interests and promoting contact and collaboration with key external partners,Participating, encouraging and actively supporting cross-functional and cross-departmental work and projects,Demonstrating respect, diplomacy and tact with external partners;
  • Achieving Results : Producing comprehensive work / project plans taking into account resources and contingencies,Defining clear objectives, milestones and deliverables before initiating work / project,Having a structured and organised approach towards work;
  • being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind;
  • Demonstrating Accountability : Working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises,Taking responsibility for own actions and decisions;
  • Communicating Effectively : Providing others with timely information,Demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences;
  • addressing issues of conflict constructively,Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented;
  • Solving Problems : Identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them,Being open to original ideas and creative options by which to address issues;

continually driving change by seeking new ways to improve outcomes.

Language skills :

Spoken and written English : ability to draw-up technical specifications and / or scientific reports and to make oral presentations.
