About the team you are joining
The Assistant DirectorAssociate General Counsel (ADAGC) is a senior legal professional withsignificant knowledge, technical and leadership skills and experience and isresponsible for providing expertise, advice, support, and research on diversesubject areas to support IATA’s business activities, both internally andexternally.
The ADAGC within the Standards Legal Workstream is part ofthe Legal Workstream leadership team under the leadership and direction of theDirector Legal Services (DLS).
The ADAGC reports to the DLS.
What your day would be like
- Provides independentlegal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerablecomplexity, which may include those related to IATA’s core activities, standardsetting (IATA Traffic Conferences), financial settlement systems (BSP andCASS), Travel Agent and Cargo Agent Programs, products and services, bankruptcylaw, antitrust law, administrative law, litigation, dispute resolution,administration and management, procurement and contracts, corporate complianceand human resources through the following activities :
- Prepares and provides toIATA’s business groups independent legal advice on questions concerning theinterpretation or application of law, legal instruments, or legal principles inrelation to IATA’s or airline member activities across multiple jurisdictions.
- Drafts appropriate responsesto correspondence and communication raising
legal issues or having legal implications.
- Drafts and advises onagreements, contracts, instruments, governance documents, and policies in thecontext of IATA's business activities
- Provides substantive legaladvice in commercial negotiations
- Responds to requests for legal assistance from clients and work assignmentsreferred by DLSs or GC
- Assigns and leads the work of junior lawyers as required
- Responsible for strategic management of IATA litigation
- Responsible for managing Legal input into relevant Advisory Councils, IATAGovernance groups and Conferences
- Provides support and assistance to DLS on the leadership of the StandardsWorkstream including providing input into performance reviews, budget,workstream business planning, work allocation.
- Works collaboratively with the DLSs and other ADAGCs to adapt to change anddevelop and implement improvements within and across the Legal Workstreams.
- Acts as a mentor to junior lawyers and provides general oversight of thequality, timeliness and professionalism of their legal work within relevantWorkstream portfolios.
- Contributes to the development of other team members.
- Peer reviews work of other team members.
- Leads client relationships on relevant Workstream portfolio work.
- Leads training for IATA staff on various topics.
- Leads projects.
- Drafts material on legal subjects for dissemination to airline legal membersincluding case reviews, summaries of legal developments.
- Manages, instructs, and approves the budget for external counsel inaccordance with team processes.
- Monitors and reviews performance of external counsel.
- Collaborates with other team members.
- Leads communication with both IATA staff, external counsel, and airlinemembers.
- Maintains strong relationships with specialist legal communities relevant toIATA’s work.

Advanced University degree in law, (LLB, JD, LLM) from aninternationally recognized university.
Industry experience (airline or travel agency).
Admission to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction, preferably the UK, EUmember state, Canada, US, Australia or New Zealand.
Ten years post legal qualification experience as a minimum in increasinglyresponsible positions in an organization, government department or law firm.
Significant legal professional knowledge, skills and experience.
