Senior Discovery Scientist Phytotechnology

In 2021, Nutreco established the Nutreco Exploration (NutEx) group who develops novel and proprietary ultra-specialty ingredients and empowers development of innovative functional feeds.

In order to discover novel ideas and develop them into exclusive ingredients, NutEx engages in two programs, i.e., phytotechnology and microtechnology.

For the phytotechnology program, Nutreco founded a Competence Center for Medicinal Plant Solutions (Nutreco Garden of the Future NuGaFu).

Located in Switzerland’s phytovalley near the Austrian and German border, the Center commands state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities allowing the conduct of all activities required for the development of PhytoComplexes used in the feed industry (bioactivity modelling facilities, phytochemistry laboratory, in vitro propagation laboratory, plant breeding greenhouse, medicinal plant exhibition garden, experimental field station for plant domestication work).

The Center also builds on an existing, worldwide network of specialty plant growers.

To expand our team, we are seeking for a Senior Discovery scientist in Phytotechnology.

Your area of responsibility :

• You will be part of the NutEx Discovery Group and support us with all aspects in planning, coordinating and supervising phytotechnology discovery projects.
• You will contribute to the discovery work by identifying possible candidates for discovery project.
• You will be responsible for investigating plant candidates for their potential use as botanical ultra-specialties, based on their phytochemical profile and their pharmacological activities.
• You will be responsible for literature research and support the up- and downstream activities, e.g. the Nutreco’s regulatory, Safety, IP and Quality teams.
• You will closely collaborate with the NutEx Plant Development Group and Plant Production Group team as well as the Deployment Group.
• You will be end responsible for evaluating research data, prepare reports and collaborate in writing scientific papers.

What you bring :

• PhD or master’s degree in Biology or PhD in Life Science with focus on Ethnobotany / Ethnopharmacy, or on Pharmacognosy, and / or on Botany.
• We expect you to bring specific knowledge in one or several of the following areas :
• Plants and their secondary metabolites
• Plant systematics
• Phytochemistry
• Nutrition / physiology / pharmacology
• In vitro bioassays, experimental pharmacology
• Natural Product Development
• Publishing scientific papers
• Fluency in written and spoken English, proficiency in German is a plus.
• Ability to travel, up to 15 - 20% of the time, for visits to our sites and for collaborative meetings offsite.
• This role will be based in Arbon, Switzerland; local labor conditions apply.
