Primary Packaging Engineer

For our client in Basel, we are looking for an experienced Packaging Engineer with strong expertise in primary pharmaceutical packaging development, packaging materials and packaging qualification.

This role is ideal for someone who combines deep technical packaging knowledge with strong stakeholder management skills and who is comfortable coordinating multiple external manufacturing partners while ensuring compliance with GMP and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as packaging subject matter expert for primary packaging systems throughout the product lifecycle.
• Support packaging development, implementation, transfer and qualification activities across multiple external manufacturing sites.
• Manage technical packaging activities with CMOs and suppliers.
• Evaluate and approve packaging materials, packaging components and packaging changes.
• Support packaging strategies, test programs, packaging specifications and packaging qualification activities.
• Ensure GMP-compliant documentation and support regulatory submissions and inspections.
• Coordinate packaging-related investigations, deviations, change controls and risk assessments.
• Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Technical Services, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain and external partners.

Required Experience

Must Have

• Degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Materials Science or related discipline.

• Minimum 5 years' experience in pharmaceutical packaging.

• Strong experience with primary packaging systems.

• Experience with packaging materials and packaging components such as:

  • vials
  • bottles
  • syringes
  • stoppers
  • closures
  • blister materials
  • foils
  • container closure systems

• Experience supporting:

  • packaging development
  • packaging qualification
  • packaging validation
  • technology transfers
  • product lifecycle management

• Good understanding of:

  • GMP requirements
  • packaging regulations
  • registration requirements
  • packaging testing
  • transport qualification
  • supplier qualification

Highly Desired

• Experience within pharmaceutical packaging development organizations

• Experience working with CMOs and external manufacturing networks.

• Experience with packaging components for sterile, parenteral or oral solid dose products.

• Experience supporting regulatory submissions and packaging-related documentation.
