About Liom

Liom is a Swiss health-tech startup dedicated to revolutionizing the field of personalized health monitoring. Our objective is to develop the first health wearable monitoring glucose non-invasively. We will launch our wearable as a consumer product in 2028, and then as a medically cleared product in the US. Our team consists of over 30 staff members, including more than 20 PhDs, with deep expertise in entrepreneurship, product development, and the required engineering as well as scientific disciplines. We are operating out of our lab facilities in Pfäffikon SZ, Switzerland.

Using our revolutionary, miniaturized, and tested proprietary optical sensors, Liom is building a cutting-edge biomedical data generation pipeline to train medical-grade machine learning algorithms to infer glucose non-invasively and transcutaneously from spectral measurements. To achieve our vision, our team and advisory board consist of world experts coming from top academic institutions (ETH, EPFL, Columbia, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, and Harvard among others) and industry leaders (Baxter, Roche, Lonza). After 5+ years in R&D phase, we are sprinting towards product development phase to launch to market. Therefore, joining as one of the first 70 permanent employees provides you great opportunities for growth in responsibilities and impact.

Responsibilities
As a Principal/Senior ML Scientist, you will research and collaboratively build computational solutions to real-world problems in our domain: a continuous non-invasive multi-biomarker monitoring smartwatch. Your work involves acquiring and smartly combining deep multi-disciplinary knowledge (biophotonics, biomedical, microfluidics, electronics, and manufacturing).

Your profile

• Master's / PhD degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Biomedical Engineering, related technical field, or equivalent algorithm development experience.
• Demonstrable capacity to digest scientific literature effectively, including cross-disciplinary domains.
• High attention to detail and proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities, being comfortable in a dynamic and sometimes ambiguous environment.
• 5+ years of experience in writing computational software working with at least one compiled and one interpreted language such as Python, Julia, Java, or C++
• 3+ years of experience in ML frameworks (e.g. Pytorch, Tensorflow, Jax), custom model development, and stochastic optimization
• 3+ years of experience in industry or applied environment
• Thorough understanding of the linear algebra, probability theory, and calculus underlying machine learning methodology
• The following qualifications are a plus:
  • Experience with transformer architectures, self-supervised learning, and foundation models
  • Experience with training and optimizing machine learning models for time series data (e.g. health signals, audio, video)
  • Experience in analyzing -omics data
  • Experience in optics or photonics
