Your role and responsibilities
ABB Smart Power’s Digital Agile Unit develops and operates energy management and control solutions for industrial customers, critical infrastructure, and data centers. The Digital Innovation Agile Team explores new technologies and customer needs to identify opportunities that can create real customer value.
This is a new role that will establish continuous user research within the team, strengthen discovery across the Digital Agile Unit, and bring customer evidence into product and innovation decisions. The person will have a high level of autonomy and will work closely with Local Sales Organizations, key account teams, product, engineering, and data science.
The work model for the role is: hybrid (#LI hybrid)
Preferred location: Europe
You will be mainly accountable for:
- Establishing and leading a continuous UX research practice across the Digital Innovation Agile Team and support wider adoption across the Digital Agile Unit.
- Planning and conducting ongoing discovery research with customers and stakeholders across the electrification and energy management value chain, including regular interviews and on-site observation.
- Building and maintaining access to research participants through Local Sales Organizations, key account teams, customer relationships, site visits, and industry events.
- Aligning quarterly research priorities with the Digital Innovation Product Owner, focusing on the most relevant customer segments, regions, use cases, and business questions.
- Analyzing research evidence to identify unmet needs, workflow challenges, recurring patterns, and differences across users and markets.
- Translating findings into clear opportunity areas and actionable recommendations for product, innovation, engineering, and data science teams.
- Maintaining research evidence, methods, and templates, while facilitating workshops and coaching teams to apply customer insights in product decisions.
Qualifications for the role
- At least 5 years of professional user research experience, including discovery interviews, qualitative analysis, or research-led product management.
- Able to plan and carry out research from start to finish with limited supervision, and comfortable setting up a new practice in a changing environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain findings clearly to technical and business audiences.
- Fluent in English.
- Curious about industrial, manufacturing, energy, electrification, or critical infrastructure environments.
- Preferred: Experience in B2B, SaaS, FinTech, enterprise, or industrial software. Exposure to OT, energy management, manufacturing, infrastructure, Agile teams, product management, or software engineering is an advantage.
- Experience setting up research practices, mentoring others, or introducing research methods into product teams is useful. ABB domain knowledge, products, markets, technical concepts, and Agile practices can be learned in the role.
- Relevant backgrounds may include SaaS, FinTech, enterprise or industrial software, automotive, healthcare, or telecommunications research. Experienced product or engineering professionals moving into research may also be considered if they bring strong research skills.
- This is a senior research role, not a UI or UX design role. The person must be comfortable working without an established research function and be motivated by understanding customer needs.
- Willing to travel 2 to 4 times per month to customer sites, trade shows, and team locations in different regions.
