ppWork with us to evolve the CERN data storage systems used at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and at its international partners. CERN is the birthplace of the World Wide Web and one of the world’s leading laboratories for particle physics. Join the Storage and Data Management Group in CERN’s IT Department as a Distributed Storage Engineer for a unique challenge as the next step in your career. CERN, take part! The CERN IT Storage and Data Management group operates the core services used by both LHC and non-LHC experiments for data collection, archival, reconstruction, analysis, and global distribution via the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. Join us to work on core data storage and management capabilities which enable scientific progress at CERN! /p pAs a Distributed Storage Engineer, you will contribute to the design, evolution, and operation of large-scale, distributed critical storage services for the CERN cloud and computing infrastructures. You will join a team to work with open-source Ceph-based block, object, and filesystem solutions (including CephFS and NFS integrations), ensuring high availability, performance, and resilience across multi-datacenter environments. /p pYour role will involve system-wide troubleshooting in a distributed Linux-based environment and optimising storage architectures for demanding workloads. You will use your C++ software development skills to help identify and troubleshoot issues with the Ceph code base and to contribute code improvements to the upstream open-source Ceph project when necessary. /p pYou will have opportunities to learn and contribute to improving automation, deployment, and observability, aligned with modern DevOps practices, to participate in inspiring projects and new technologies such as storage for HPC and AI/ML and to engage with our international partners, participating to conferences and workshops. /p h3Functions /h3 pManagement and operations of distributed disk storage, block, object and filesystem services based on mainstream open-source technologies (Ceph) /p pParticipate in the evolution of architecture and design of storage services for CERN and software-defined storage technology with Open Source /p pIntegrate, troubleshoot and maintain distributed disk storage systems at scale, across multiple availability zones and data centres. /p pContribute to documentation, development, optimisation and further automation of storage services. /p pContribute to change management, incident response, and user support. /p pLiaise with key stakeholders inside and outside of the IT department. /p pMaster's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Computer Science or a related field. /p h3Experience /h3 pStrong interest in service management, including operations, troubleshooting, user support, configuration and automation /p pDeep understanding of Linux operating system performance, tuning and administration /p pDeep understanding of architecture of distributed storage and filesystems (e.g. NFS, CephFS) /p pDebugging and diagnosing issues in complex distributed environments, spanning hardware, network, and software layers /p pDemonstrated experience in C++ software development of distributed storage systems (preferably, but not necessarily, with Ceph source code) /p pStrong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with multiple cross-functional teams, users and partners. /p h3Nice-to-have Skills /h3 ul liGood knowledge of scripting languages (python, shell) /li /ul h3Technical competencies /h3 ul liDesign of storage systems. /li liDevelopment of application software. /li liKnowledge of programming techniques and languages. /li liKnowledge of storage technologies. /li liOperation and maintenance (preventive and corrective) of storage systems. /li /ul h3Behavioural competencies /h3 ul liAchieving Results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs. /li liDemonstrating Flexibility: readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working. /li liSolving Problems: seeking and integrating other points of view when tackling an issue; consulting experts in the field and undertaking benchmarking. /li liWorking in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships. /li liLearning and Sharing Knowledge: seeking feedback from colleagues and other stakeholders about ways of increasing competence. /li /ul h3Language skills /h3 pSpoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French. /p h3Eligibility and closing date /h3 pDiversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
