The Swiss Ornithological Institute is a non-profit foundation dedicated to ornithology and the protection of birds. It monitors native birds, researches their way of life and advocates for threatened species. It looks after injured and orphaned birds, provides information and advice to the public, and runs a visitor center in Sempach. The Swiss Ornithological Institute currently has over 200 employees in all parts of the country.
The habitats of numerous migratory and resident bird species in the African-Eurasian flyway are increasingly threatened by degradation and land-use change. Effective, community-based habitat restoration and protection is essential to sustain both biodiversity and local livelihoods.

Your tasks
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Habitat Restoration and Avian Conservation Expert to support the conservation of migratory and resident landbird species across the African-Eurasian region. The role involves consulting on and assessing habitat restoration initiatives that deliver tangible benefits for biodiversity and local communities.
- Stimulate and consult habitat restoration projects benefiting birds and people.
- Conduct and coordinate ecological impact assessments of restoration initiatives.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer on bird conservation and habitat management in African contexts.
- Collaborate at UN-convention level, with governments, NGOs, the private sector, and donors.
- Develop grant proposals to support restoration and conservation work.
- Produce technical reports, scientific analyses, and policy recommendations for conservation partners.
- Represent our organisation at regional and international meetings and technical working groups.
Your profile
- Advanced university degree in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in habitat restoration and biodiversity conservation, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Profound ornithological expertise, with excellent knowledge of both migratory and resident birds in Europe and Africa.
- A strong commitment to partnership-based work in African settings, with the ability to adapt to diverse working environments.
- Experience in ecological impact assessment, among other via passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and data analysis.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Excellent social skills and the ability to work well in a team. High levels of resilience and flexibility.
- Strong interest and competence in drafting, revising and publishing documents at all levels.
- Experience in grant writing and fundraising.
- Fluency in English and French required.
