Stellenbeschreibung

At BIIE you will be part of a mission to build translational solutions to improve global child health. We use Benchling as our Electronic Lab Notebook and Laboratory Information Management System (ELN/LIMS) to power our R&D data management. As our research programmes expand and our user base grows, we need a seasoned Scientific Applications Analyst to take ownership of how scientists' needs are captured, prioritized, and translated into effective solutions on Benchling and beyond. This role sits within Lab Automation and Digitalization team and works at the interface between bench scientists, IT, automation, and data management – ensuring the right problems get solved in the right order.

Tasks

  • Requirements Engineering & Discovery: Proactively engage with BIIE's research groups to map experimental workflows, identify pain points, and uncover underlying needs – going beyond surface-level requests to find the most impactful opportunities for new ways to structure data, processes, and automation on Benchling.
  • Benchling Champions Programme: Take ownership of the weekly internal Benchling stakeholders’ meeting (Benchling Champions): set the agenda, facilitate cross-group discussions, synthesize requirements, and drive decisions on platform priorities. Ensure outcomes are communicated and tracked.
  • Process Modeling: Dive deep into the complex scientific workflows of our research teams to understand how they work. You will translate these lab processes into solid Benchling data models, making sure the captured data is accurate and reusable. A key goal is aligning these models across teams to build institute-wide standards and make it easy for scientists to share and leverage data with internal and external collaborators.
  • Ticket & Demand Management: Own the support ticketing pipeline end-to-end. Ensure every request has clear requirements, triage effectively, and delegate technical implementation tickets to the engineering-focused applications team. Ensure transparency on delivery timelines to build trust across the institute.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Change Management: Serve as the primary liaison between scientists and the research operations team for all Benchling-related changes. Manage expectations, communicate roadmap priorities, and champion adoption of new features and workflows across diverse research groups.
  • Training & Knowledge Management: Ensure sufficient Benchling expertise across the institute by designing and delivering role-appropriate training. Take primary responsibility for onboarding and ongoing support of faculty research groups, while coordinating with technical colleagues who support power users.
  • Automation & Integration Input: Feed automation opportunities identified during requirements discovery into the automation team's pipeline. Provide clear specifications so automation solutions meet real scientific needs.

Requirements

  • Scientific background with laboratory experience. A PhD in a relevant field (immunology, molecular biology, bioengineering, or similar) is a strong, although optional advantage.
  • 2+ years of experience in business analysis, requirements engineering, scientific data management, or scientific project management within a research, biotech, or pharmaceutical environment.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders, triage competing demands, and identify the highest-impact improvements rather than simply fulfilling requests. Product management experience is of great benefit.
  • Experience working with ELN/LIMS platforms (Benchling experience preferred). Understanding of common data models and best practices in laboratory informatics.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills. Comfortable leading meetings, writing clear specifications, and managing change across teams.
  • Open-minded and empathetic – able to see challenges from multiple perspectives and build consensus in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Fluency in English in a professional environment.

Benefits

At BIIE you will play a pivotal role in shaping how cutting-edge immunology research data is captured and utilized. You will have real ownership of how the institute's digital lab infrastructure evolves as we scale toward 300 staff members. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package (generous pension fund contributions, flexible working arrangements, including home office options, half-fare travelcard/Halbtax), support for professional development, and a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary working environment where your work directly accelerates scientific discovery.

Apply today to shape how BIIE captures and leverages its research data.

The Botnar Institute of Immune Engineering is a newly founded non-profit research organization aiming to become a world leading research institute for the advanced study of immunological systems with a mission to develop translational solutions for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

The scientific foundation of the BIIE is based on the intersection of three interdisciplinary subdomains: (i) systems immunology, (ii) synthetic immunology and (iii) computational immunology. The BIIE will serve as a hub for multidisciplinary science, by uniting people with diverse expertise in immunology, biomedicine, bioengineering, systems and synthetic biology, computational biology, artificial intelligence and machine learning. As part of the mission of BIIE to make a lasting impact, it will dedicate significant efforts in training early-stage researchers in this unique multidisciplinary environment, thus enabling them to become future leaders in Immune Engineering.
