Topic description

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). PhD student on three-dimensional lake hydrodynamic modelling

This research opportunity is an integral part of an exciting project aimed at advancing our understanding of lake dynamics and their ecological implications. We utilize state-of-the-art 3D hydrodynamic models (refer to more information) to delve into the complexities of lake systems. As a candidate, your primary responsibility will involve developing and refining 3D hydrodynamic models to simulate and analyse physical processes within lakes. The overarching goal of this research is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of horizontal structures within lakes and quantify their impact.

In this role, you will engage in data assimilation of both in-situ and remotely sensed observations into hydrodynamic models. Additionally, you will be responsible for the implementation of Lagrangian particle tracking methods. Finally, you will employ the output from these models to evaluate and assess horizontal patterns in lakes. The project emphasizes open science, and operational model output will be made openly accessible through a web-based data platform (take a look at reference).

We are actively seeking exceptional and highly motivated candidates who have earned a master's degree in a relevant field, such as physics, environmental science, applied mathematics, or computer science. An interdisciplinary mindset is crucial, as we encourage collaboration across various disciplines. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work effectively in teams are essential qualities we are looking for. This position will be located within the SURF Department in the Aquatic Physics group led by Damien Bouffard.
