The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Basel and the Heart Centre of the University Hospital Basel are announcing the position of a Professor of Cardiac Surgery in conjunction with the position of Head of the department Cardiac Surgery.
The professorship is affiliated with the Department of Cardiac Surgery, which is an integral part of the Heart Centre at the University Hospital Basel. The depart-ment of Cardiac Surgery serves as the primary provider of academic cardiac sur-gery services for all north-western Switzerland and beyond. The University Hospital Heart Centre is home of the esteemed “Cardiovascular Research Insti-tute Basel" (CRIB), renowned globally for its contributions to cardiovascular re-search. The research focus of the vacant professorship is flexible and open. However, transplant surgery research cannot be pursued due to lack of HSM ap-proval for transplantation.
Your position
You will head the Department of Cardiac Surgery within the University Hospital's Heart Centre. Your role will include all associated medical, financial and organi-sational management. With your clinical expertise and your background in re-search, you will strengthen the national and international visibility and recognition of the Department of Cardiac Surgery and the Heart Centre at the University Hospital Basel. You will apply your clinical expertise and interest in teaching to secure and advance state-of-the-art training and continuing education of resi-dents and registrars in heart surgery, cardiology and internal medicine in accor-dance with the requirements of the Swiss Institute for Medical Training and Continuing Education (SIWF). With your commitment to academic research and teaching, you will inspire students and promote young academics in cardiac sur-gery and cardiology. Your participative, goal-oriented understanding of leadership will ensure an attractive working environment for academic and clinical specia-lists in cardiac surgery and the entire heart centre. You will lead a cardiac sur-gery research group and create a productive environment for successful research teams. You will be an integral part of the Cardiovascular Research Insti-tute Basel and help to increase its international scientific reputation.

Your profile
You have broad clinical and scientific experience in all areas of cardiac surgery as well as the highest level of clinical expertise in minimally invasive reconstruction of heart valves or open surgery of the ascending aorta and aortic arch. You have successfully conducted own research activities, including securing competitive third-party funding in a research area associated with cardiac surgery. You have proven leadership experience in an academic environment. Your distinctive expertise, leadership and outstanding communication skills place you in an ideal position to gain acceptance and trust. You can create an attractive work environment, inspire creative thinking that can be put into action, and en-courage your employees. Your knowledge of German is very well.
